An iconic tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a significant array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.

Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in several nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
