Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
He commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the company, and look forward tracking their progress".
The former Harvard president, who once headed the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 apprehension for suspected human trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it understood the economist's choice to depart.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he brought to the directors," the company stated.
Legislative Background
This development follows after the entire Congress of Congress voted on Tuesday to approve a measure that would mandate the US justice department to make public its files on the case.
The bill will then head to the desk of President Trump for signature. Trump has indicated he intends to sign the bill, after changing his position on the issue following pushback from his supporters.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-connected messages released by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned numerous well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.
The messages showed that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to notable global figures.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were shared with the general audience, Summers expressed he accepted "total ownership for my misguided decision to continue communicating with the financier".
He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild confidence and repair bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Professional History
Summers held high-level positions under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When declaring his departure from public roles earlier on this week, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in DC where Summers was a researcher, verified that he was no longer connected with the organization.
He became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
